History

Then

Belverdale Hospital was first established by Sr. Beatrice Brooks in 1910, she was sponsored by four local  General Practitioners who operated at Wanganui Base Hospital free of charge.  Private surgery gave these doctors an income which helped to subsidise their work in the public sector.

Whilst changing hands several times, Belverdale Hospital remained a private surgical hospital.  Southern Cross Trust purchased the building in 1986 and refurbished it in 1987.  A new hospital was then constructed in 1993.  Whanganui’s Southern Cross Hospital was closed in July 2000.  A group of specialists ensured Whanganui retained the services of a private hospital and in February 2001 Belverdale Hospital Ltd was officially opened.
